Mighty Haribon

Philippine eagle chick hatched

DAVAO CITY--The prolific pair of eagles named Tsai and Princess Maasim produced another chick, the sixth surviving offspring of the birds, according to the Philippine Eagle Center here.
Dennis Salvador, director of the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF), which runs the center, said the still unnamed eaglet weighed 155.9 grams when it cracked its shell on Dec. 7. It became the 22nd eagle bred and hatched in captivity since the PEF launched its breeding project a few years ago.
"The pair [Tsai and Princess Maasim] serves as the epitome of hope that the Philippine Eagle will continue to rule the skies and survive," Salvador said.
The Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi) was declared one of the country's protected species after studies showed that there could only be 500 pairs left in the wild.
