Cuyo Islands
The CUYO ISLANDS, are a world unto themslves, consisting of 45 tiny islands, they are really in the middle of nowhere, situated 17 hours from Puerto Princesa by ferry, even the main island CUYO does not have any resorts.Seair has a twice weekly flight from Puerto Princesa to the tiny airstrip on Cuyo opening up these beautiful islands to a sort of new frontier for tourists.
There is much to do in these parts, but you must be able to put up with the complete lack of a tourist infrastructure, and sometimes strong winds, that can disrupt your plans for island hopping.
The best base is CUYO TOWN itself, situated on the western side of Cuyo,i really like this old fishing village with its estimable old Spanish church and fort, there is a pier here, and this is where the ferries arrive, you can hire a banca here. A typical days days island hopping will cost around 700 peso (£7) and will include visits to the uninhabited PANDAN ISLAND, a strikingly beautiful island with black volcanic rocks contrasting the ribbon of golden sand. Seland Island which has a fine beach and good snorkelling, and Bisucay Island, where you will find very good snorkelling.
From Cuyo Town you can walk along paths that crisscross the island with paths that lead you through coconut and cahew nut groves to QUEJANO BEACH, where they are building a large beach resort. Another great walk is to the summit of MOUNT AGUADO, from where you have panoramic views of the whole island, the trail is reached in a short 10 minute tricycle ride from Cuyo town.
To find the pier (it is not difficult) go to the end of Sandoval Street, just 100 meters from the Town center. Cuyo airstrip is a 20 peso ride into town. The only accomodation in town is about 200 meters inland from the pier, called the PALOMA LODGE, situated in Sandoval Street, it has six rooms, each with a bunk bed and fan, the toilet and cold shower are shared. You can eat in the Sandavol Canteen, that is nearby, food includes scrambled eggs ,grilled fish, and the local jackfruit and bean soup, or you could try LATO, a type of seaweed that you eat raw which looks like a small bunch of grapes...yummy
The SEAIR office is actually in the the Sandoval Canteen
